Money and Meaning

A Collection of Writings on Investing and Living with Cancer

Yesterday was treatment day.

Having done this bi-weekly for eight years, I have outlasted most of my nurses and technicians who have moved on to greener pastures. But, there is one constant – “Sally”, the volunteer!

With a radiant smile, she effortlessly extends her helping hand to patients. Whether it is getting them coffee or juice, helping older ones with automated check-in, picking up litter, or answering patients’ questions to make their stay in the infusion center more comfortable.

Chatting with her recently, I learned she as been doing this every week for more than a dozen years. Having battled cancer herself fifteen years ago at the same hospital, she turned her experience into a mission to uplift others.

The consummate volunteer Mother Teresa once said “Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love.”

Thank you, Sally, for all the small things you do!
