I recently visited the Golden Temple in Amritsar, India. I fully expected to be impressed by its grandeur and spirituality. And, I was.
But even more impressive was the sense of duty, pride, and selfless service permeating in the air. Hundreds and hundreds of volunteers from all over the world, rich and poor, were working side-by-side to cook meals, serve them, wash the dishes, and clean the floors.
There was no one organizing a drive to bring in the volunteers. They came on their own and traveled long distances to get there. They do it every day. Hundreds of them!
The setting is the community kitchen within the temple. It is the biggest community kitchen in the world that serves free meals to 100,000 people daily. No wonder BBC described Amritsar as “The City Where No One Goes Hungry.”

There is no better place than the Golden Temple to re-learn that giving back is a core principle of a good life. What a timely reminder as we begin the New Year!
